Lalita/Tripura Sundari/Shodashi

Tripura Sundari ("Beauty of Three Worlds"), also called Shodashi ("Vermilion-hued"), Lalita ("She Who Plays"[1]) and Rajarajeshvari ("Queen of Queens"), is one of the group of ten goddesses of Hindu belief, collectively called mahavidyas.

The goddess Tripura Sundari in her aspect as Shodasi is represented as a sixteen-year-old girl, and is believed to embody sixteen types of desire. The Shodasi Tantra, a treatise on the Tantra, describes Tripura Sundari as "Beauty Of Three Worlds". She is described as being of dusky color, and is depicted in an intimate position with an aspect of Shiva. The couple are shown on a bed, a throne, or a pedestal resting on the significant male gods of Hinduism like Brahma, Vishnu, Shiva, and Indra.
The Indian state of Tripura derives its name from the goddess Tripura Sundari. Her main temple, the Tripura Sundari temple is also located on top of the hills near Radhakishorepur village, a little distance away from Udaipur town. Kashmiri Pandits have a collection of five ancient hymns, collectively known as Panchastavi, that were composed ages ago in praise of Tripura Sundari. These ancient hymns still remain very popular among this community.

Tripura sundari or Lalita is the goddess associated with Sri Vidya. The panchadashakshari mantra is the most guarded secrets of Sri Vidya, Usually a Guru gives it to the highly deserving disciple. As it is said in Lalita sahasranama, 'Na shathaya na dushtaya na vishwasaya karhichith sri mathra bhakti yuktaya sri vidya raja vediney' means, that this divine knowledge or vidya should not be taught or given to a person who is wicked, depraved or unfaithful. It should only be taught to a deserving person as this is the King of all Vidyas. Before the panchadashakshari mantra is given the disciple is given Bala Mantra in which the goddess is visualized as 9 year old girl. However even after the pachadashakshari mantra is given there are more stages in which Shodashi the 16 letter mantra is given and then Maha Shodashi. Also there is Kameswari and Kameswara vidya where 64 lettered mantra is used. All these remain till today also in secret as it is imparted only to deserving disciples. The final stage reaches where the disciple is announced as Para Bhattaraka which means the Emperor of the whole universe. It is however to be noted that all famous personalities in the history have received Sri Vidya which includes Mahatma Gandhi, Ramana Maharshi, Swami Vivekananda (who was given Bala mantra by Ramakrishna and then subsequently Panchadashakshari mantra by Chattambi Swamigal), Meera Bai, Kabir, and the list goes on. Sri Vidya thus itself identifies as the supreme vidya available. The Sri Vidya sadhak (disciple) is identified as Bahu Tantra Vith, the one who is adept in all the other tantras. Lalita holds five flowery arrows, noose, goad and bow. The noose represents attachment, the goad represents repulsion, the sugarcane bow represents the mind and the flowery arrows are the five sense objects.

Etymology
'Tripura' means 'the three worlds' (Svarloka, Bhuloka, and Patala). 'Sundari' means 'most attractive' or 'most beautiful'. Therefore, her name means 'The Most Beautiful Girl in the Three Worlds'. A more esoteric interpretation is that she is called Tripuraa (meaning, 'The Three Ancients', rather than Tripura, 'The Three Worlds') because her body is said to be made up of the collective Shaktis of Brahma, Vishnu, and Rudra (Brahmani, Vaishnavi, and Rudrani, respectively).

Lalitha Sahasranamam - 1000 Names of Lalita

Lalita sahasranama is a sacred Hindu text for the worshippers of the Goddess Lalita Devi, i.e. the Divine Mother, in the form of her and the male gods' feminine power, Shakti. Lalita is the Goddess of bliss, an epithet for Parvati. Etymologically, "Lalita" means "She Who Plays". In the root form (vyutpatti), the word "Lalita" means "spontaneous" from which the meaning "easy" is derived and from there-forth the word implicitly extends to "play". It is supposedly one of the most complete stotras, one need only recite it to gain total salvation. (Wiki)

Lalita Tripurasundari, the Red Goddess
Dear One, Tripura is the ultimate, primordial Shakti, the light of manifestation. She, the pile of letters of the alphabet, gave birth to the three worlds. At dissolution, She is the abode of all tattvas, still remaining Herself - Vamakeshvaratantra

What is Shri Vidya and what relationship does it have to the goddess Lalita and to her yantra, the Shri Yantra? Vidya means knowledge, specifically female knowledge, or the goddess, and in this context relates to her aspect called Shri, Lalita or Tripurasundari whose magical diagram is called the Shri Yantra. She is a red flower, so her diagram is a flower too.

The tantrik tradition views its symbols as having a gross aspect, a subtle aspect, and a supreme aspect. In terms of Lalita, the gross form is the image of the goddess with her four arms and so forth, the subtle form is as yantra, and the supreme form is her mantra, all three being the goddess in different aspects. Behind the sometimes colourful symbolism is deep wisdom coupled with practical methods for realising oneself.

Lalita loves puja. This term is usually translated as worship. However, this is misleading, as it introduces a duality into a process intended to bring the practitioner (sadhaka or sadhvika) to a non-dual position. There can be various pujas including daily rites, those performed at the four twilights, rites done for specific objects, optional rites done on festival days, or on otherwise auspicious days such as lunar eclipses or the entrance of the sun into a sidereal constellation, rites in assemblies or groups, and rites accomplished with a partner. Subhagodaya, on this site, is a translation which gives the full puja of Tripurasundari or Lalita.

Lalita means She Who Plays. All creation, manifestation and dissolution is considered to be a play of Devi or the goddess. Mahatripurasundari is her name as transcendent beauty of the three cities, a description of the goddess as conqueror of the three cities of the demons, or as the triple city (Tripura), but really a metaphor for a human being.

What then is a yantra? The word is usually translated as a machine, but in the special sense of the tantrik tradition refers to the Devi in her linear or geometrical form. Yantras, by the way, are always used flat. They may be two-dimensional or three-dimensional. Every aspect of Devi has her own mantra and yantra. The yantra of Devi Lalita is Shri Yantra. The divinity of the yantra always occupies the centre or apex.

The different parts or petals and lines of the yantra are usually arranged in concentric circles (mandalas) and contain rays or sub-limbs of devi. The Shri Yantra has nine of these mandals, each filled with various aspects of the Devi. In Shri Yantra there are 111 aspects. The Shri Yantra is said to be a geometric form of the human body, which implies that goddess as Macrocosm is one with human being as Microcosm.

Goddess Lalita is considered the embodiment of Para Shakti or the ultimate female power. Legends associated with Goddess Lalita are found in mythological texts. Devi Bhagavata, Durga Saptashati in Markandeya Purana by the sage Vyasa and Tripura Rahasya narrated by the Lord Dattatreya are some such texts. Books related to Tantra also mention the goddess. As per legends Goddess Lalita represents the Panchabhuta: fire, air, water, space and earth. She always appears as though she is 16 years of age. This description is interpreted in another way as well. According to this theory Goddess Lalita appears in the form of 16 nityadevis. While depicting the war between Bhandasura and the goddess, Lalita Sahasranama Stotra mentions the nityadevis. Her consort is Shiva Kama Sundara.

Lalita Sahasranama Stotra, the hymn of 1000 names of Lalita is the best one venerated by the followers of all the traditions. There is not a single ritual, which has any difference of opinion on this hymn, which is found in the Brahmanda Purana. The spiritual masters of the past have written several commentaries on the Lalita Sahasranama Stotra. They have firmly established that the hymn contains the essence of the Mantra Shastra (the science of holy chants) of the entire world. They have thoroughly analysed and described each name of the hymn from various aspects.

Goddess Lalita Tripura Sundari is referred in Hindu literature time and again. She is described in great detail as extremely beautiful, gorgeous, and erotically inclined. The Lalitha Sahasranama illustrates her charismas from head to foot. She is described as the one who recreates the universe. She was manifested through a Maha Yaga performed by Maha Shambhunatha. Lalita is called Tripura Sundari as Her Body consists of three Shaktis that is Brahma, Vaishnavi and Raudri.

In Adi Shankaracharya`s book `Tripura Sundari Ashtakam` describes Lalita as a Mother, she portrays as giving shelter. In this book Lalita as the mother nourishes breasts akin to mountain peaks that give birth to rivers. She is represented as wearing a blue dress with red spots, holding a pot of honey, her eyes quivering with intoxication.

Lalita or Tripura Sundari together combines the features of Kali and Durga. She has Kali`s determination and Durga`s charm, grace and complexion. She has a third eye on her forehead. Lalita is said to be four-armed and clad in red dress. She is the heavily ornamented and sits on a lotus seat laid on a golden throne. Lalita carries in her hands various Shaivite attributes.

Lalitha Jayanti – Goddess Lalita Jayanthi

Lalitha Jayanti is observed on the Purnima, or full moon day, in the month of Magh (January – February). Lalitha Jayanthi 2010 date is January 30. The day is dedicated to Lalita Devi, a form of Shakti or Mother Goddess. She is associated with the Pancha Mahabhutas or five elements. Goddess Lalitha is believed to be the representation or form of the five elements –earth, water, air, fire, and space.

The day is of great significance in some regions in North India. Special pujas and rituals are held on the day.

One of the most popular days associated with Goddess Lalitha falls on the fifth day during the Saran Navratri in Aswhin month and is known as Lalita Panchami.

Five Cantos on Lalita

At morning, I remember the lotus-like body of Lalita, Who has red lips, Who has a waist decorated by large pearls, Who has curved eyes whose corners reach the ears, Who has earrings with opulent jewel, Who has a beautiful smile, and Who has a forehead decorated with the musk of a deer.||1||

At morning, I sing praise of Lalita, Who has creeper like curvy arms, Whose flower-like finger-tips are adorned by shining jewels, Whose hands are adorned by bracelets made of precious stones studded in gold, and Who holds a large sugar-cane like bow and a flowery arrow and a stick in Her hands.||2||

At morning, I bow to the lotus-feet of Lalita, Who is skilled in giving the wishes to the devotees, Who is like the boat to cross the ocean-like cycle of birth, Who is worthy of respect from lotus-seated Brahma and other leader of natural forces, and Who is decorated by the marks of lotus, stick (ankush), flag and sudarshan.||3||

At morning, I pray Lalita, Who is known as Bhavani and Shiva, Who is the last-evolution (or understanding) of the three Veda and theories derived from them, Who is full of mercy, Who is perfect, Who takes a form for the creation and destruction of this world, Who is the ruler of the universe, and Who is very far away from the spoken words of the treatises.||4||

O Lalita! At morning, I chant Your pure name by mouth after saying these: Kameshvari (fulfilling wishes), Kamala (Lakshmi), Maheshvari, Shri (Lakshmi), Shambhavi (the consort of Shambhu), the Mother of universe, Paraa (beyond), Vagdevata (controller of speech), and Tripureshvari (ruler or three worlds).||5||

If someone studies these five-cantos on Lalita, the Mother — which bestows good-luck and is beautiful — at morning, Lalita instantly becomes happy and bestows knowledge, wealth, welfare, and immeasurable glory on that person.||6||
